Medicare Urgent Care Clinics give you and your family more options to see a doctor or nurse when urgent, but not life-threatening, care is needed.

The best place to go for care depends on the urgency and level of care you need.

Urgent Care

Group 7

You can walk into a Medicare Urgent Care Clinic for bulk-billed urgent care. Free treatment for urgent conditions that aren’t life threatening.

Visit an Urgent Care Clinic for:

Medicare Urgent Care Clinics do not provide treatment for regular checkups or complex conditions. Your local GP should continue to be your first point of contact for non-emergency, routine and preventative health care.

An Urgent Care Clinic can NOT provide replacements for lost, stolen or destroyed prescriptions - Including prescriptions for pain medications and other controlled substances.

Visit your nearest Medicare Urgent Care Clinic

Medicare UCCs will refer you to the emergency department if you have a life-threatening injury or illness, or to your GP for non-urgent, routine and preventative health care.

General Practice

Group 6

This is your regular, trusted doctor. Your general practice should be the first place you go for all your health needs, except emergencies.
Some GPs are open outside standard business hours, including evenings and weekends.

Visit your regular GP for:

  • diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of diseases and illnesses
  • general screening and health checks
  • vaccinations and prescriptions
  • mental health advice
  • family planning advice
  • referrals for tests, scans or specialist care
  • ongoing chronic disease care and health assessments.

Emergency Care

Group 8

Emergency departments should be reserved for situations that could result in loss of life or limb if not treated immediately.

Seek Emergency care for:

  • chest pain or tightness
  • breathing difficulties
  • uncontrollable bleeding
  • severe burns
  • poisoning
  • numbness or paralysis
  • unconscious
  • unresponsive or having seizures
  • ongoing fever in infants.

Call triple zero (000) or go to your nearest emergency department
